Interrupting Our Way of Being
We travel through life in familiar ways: routine patterns of interactions, schedules, and obligations. But every once in awhile, we meet someone or experience something that stops us; someone or something that interrupts our way of being. These interruptions force us to view ourselves and our world through new lenses. This is precisely the work of MSU’s "Internationalizing Student Life (ISL)."
Globalization and Its Impact on our Lives
Definitions of globalization abound. Our challenge is to help students discover the meaning of globalization as it relates to their individual lives and the world around them. Toward that end, we are creating experiences, programs, and interactions that will “promote global competencies (skills, knowledge, and attitudes) beyond what is possible merely as part of the formal curriculum. It involves courses and curricula, experiential learning opportunities, extra- and co-curricular experiences, and social and civic experiences.” (MSU NCA Report 2006)
An initial emphasis of our work will be placed on creating experiential activities that allow for students to:
-
•learn about and develop an appreciation for cultures other than their own
-
•develop interpersonal communication skills for successful cross-cultural exchange
-
•see how globalization affects their lives
